Children's Coalition

We plan to be unofficially affiliated with the United Nation’s Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and to help the organization in their quest to “advance humanity”, that is to help improve kids' lives around the world.

For example:

  1. We plan to participate in their water purity program. We will collect money that will be used toward cleaning the water of undeveloped nations. Pure water is absolutely necessary and will decrease the number of deaths caused by kidney failure & bacteria related diseases.
  2. UNICEF recently pledged to donate a large sum to the United States’ Hurricane Katrina victims; we plan to help UNICEF raise that sum of money.

Special Events:

  • Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF : Oct. 31, 2005
    • With the help of the Student Council, the Children's Aid Coalition raised $567.79 during our Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF on Halloween 2005. We sincerely thank all of you for your participation and generosity. This money will go to assist children suffering from malnutrition and disease, and will help the youngest victims of Hurricane Katrina as well.
  • Pen Pals for Project Sunshine: TBA
  • Orphanage Visiting : December, 2005
  • Save Darfur Wristbands TBA (We will talk about whether or not we can do this w/NHS)

Great opportunity to get involved; Great way to learn about the world that they all live in; Great chance to help out and "advance humanity".

Film Club

For those who love movies! We will explore various film techniques, styles, genres. We'll be looking at films from the past 60 years, with particular focus on the last 30 years. You do not need to know film terms to enjoy movies. All you need is a rabid love of films. Film Club meets in C202 every Tuesday afternoon. We start at 2:30 and end (usually) around 4:30 or 5:00pm.

Special Events:
Upcoming films--ask the film club sponsor for the schedule: Rocky (drama/action), Poltergeist (spooooky), Seven Samurai (one of the greatest films to ever come from Nihon), Bridge on the River Kwai (great comparison to Shawshank Redemption), Big (comedy, Tom Hanks breakout role), Adventures of Baron Munchausen (overlooked masterpiece of creativity and action!), Manchurian Candidate (original is so amazing!), Godzilla (need I say more? Grrrrrrar!).

All films are PG-13 or lower. Occasionally I may show a scene or scenes from an R rated film, but it will be an edited version. We will also have movie trivia parties!

This club gives you the opportunity to view experience, appreciate and produce Art. For further information contact the school office to learn who is the contact person for this year’s activities.

GO Club

Go is a stategic board game using black and white stones to gain and hold territory. Its history goes back over 4000 years and is one of the most popular games in Japan, China, and Korea. It is also rapidly becoming very popular in Europe and the U.S., especially on college campuses.

The KHS go club meets on Mondays after school in room 304. Students and faculty members are welcome.

Japanese Club

Japanese Club sponsors many activities like fund raisers. We usually offer holiday grams but last year we collected money and item donations for the Nigata earthquake victims. We also take field trips to learn about Japanese Culture. Our hope this year is to make the Japanese Club more interesting and rewarding for members.

Events Planned for this year:
We are planning to sponsor a "New Years Grams" fund raiser. We are also planning a field trip to the Ramen Museum.

International Thespian Society

The International Thespian Society is dedicated to helping students appreciate dramatic arts. We meet once a month for games, discussions, and other activities related to theatre. Everyone is welcome. Participation is free. Through participating with the International Thespian Society and the school drama events students can earn points to become a member of the society. Once a member of the society students receive monthly publications, medallions for graduation, and a great entry on college applications. In May, students with enough points are initiated into the International Thespian Society with a ceremony during an awards presentation.

KHS Dance

KHS Dance Team consists of students who are interested in creating, practicing and performing dance routines. Currently we are meeting on Mondays and Fridays in the Student Forum.
KHS Dance Team

KHS Step

We are a group of students who create step and dance routines to perform at a variety of events throughout the year. We typically perform at pep rallies at least once a quarter, and are made up of both male and female students. Tryouts were held at the beginning of the school year, but incoming students are more than welcome to come tryout once they arrive here at Kinnick.

Our first performance was on October 27, 2005 at the homecoming pep rally.

KiCS

KiCS (originally Band Aids) was founded by two Kinnick students as a means for Kinnick students to provide volunteer services to their community. In the past two years, KiCS has focused on two major projects: peer tutoring and working with pre-school children.

For the 2004-2005 school year, KiCS students provided over 400 hours of free service to the community.

Our first performance was on October 27, 2005 at the homecoming pep rally.

School Newspaper

The Echoes staff’s primary responsibility is producing the school newspaper, and the Newspaper Journalism class is a busy one. We spend time learning about photography, captions, and headlines. We learn about feature stories, newswriting, editorials and sportswriting. We study Pulitzer Prize winning journalists and discuss the ethics of journalism.

The students come to class knowing little to nothing about leads, the inverted pyramid and deadlines, and soon find they are designing pages and logos, and placing photos and stories like pros. They learn how and where to edit stories.

The Echoes staff is also responsible for putting together the periodic Schools page in the base Seahawk paper.

Yearbook

The Krimson K staff’s primary responsibility is producing the school yearbook.

We are excited about Kinnick’s first all-color yearbook, and the students are hard at work to make this book extra special. The Yearbook Production class is a busy one; we spend time learning about photography, caption, headline and story writing and page layout and design. The students come to class knowing little to nothing about picas, eyelines, photo resolution, leads and lead-ins, and soon they find they are falling asleep with visions of deadlines and design elements filling their heads. This group of hard-working students puts in countless hours after school and on weekends, as well as time in class, to make certain the yearbook arrives by the first part of June.
